How To: Restrict distribution lists to accept messages from specific users

Business Scenario:

We want to allow a distribution list to receive messages only from a specific list of users.

More Information:

By default, all mailbox-enabled groups can accept messages from everyone in an Exchange organization. You can apply restrictions to a group, so that it accepts messages from a specific list of users; or you can allow the group to accept messages from everyone except a specific list of users.

Steps:

To receive messages from a specific list of users:

1. In GroupID Management Console, select Automate > [required group node].
2. In the Groups list, right-click the required group and select Properties.
3. On the group properties dialog box, click the Exchange General tab.
   Settings in the Message Restrictions section control who can and who cannot send messages to this group.
   • To accept messages from specific senders:
     In the Accept messages area, select the Only from option button and click Add. The Find dialog box opens, where you can locate and select the users and groups to accept messages from.
   • To reject messages from specific senders:
     In the Reject messages area, select the Only from option button and click Add. On the Find dialog box, locate and select the users and groups to reject messages from.
4. Click Apply and then OK.

To apply a quick filter:

The Apply a quick filter list (on the Exchange General tab) provides a list of options for selecting recipients the group can accept messages from.

• None - No restrictions apply. This group accepts messages from everyone.
• Owner + Members (good) - Only the members of the group, the primary owner, additional owner(s), and Exchange additional owner(s) will be able to send messages to this group.
• Owner only (best) - Only the primary owner, additional owner(s), and Exchange additional owner(s) can send messages to this group.

According to the option selected, recipients get listed in the Accept messages area. Use the Add and Remove buttons to modify the list.

Note:

For Dynasties, the accept/reject message configurations are inherited by child Dynasties from their respective parent Dynasties if the following attributes are available in the Selected Attributes area.
