GroupID 9 and 10

Business Scenario:

GroupID is a suite of applications that perform a wide range of identity and access management functions.

In order to track and troubleshoot any anomaly in the system, GroupID is equipped with a comprehensive logging mechanism. The application generates logs for its modules and events, which are saved at different paths on the GroupID file system (provided that log settings are enabled for the identity store).

Problem Statement:

The log files for different modules and events are generated and saved at diverse locations. Given the number of logs, it may not be easy to recall all log file locations. An especially frustrating situation would be when you are urgently looking for a log file and you can’t find it.

Solution:

GroupID offers two simple ways to locate logs.

  • Consult the ‘Configuring event logging’ topic in the GroupID documentation.
  • Dump the required log files to a specific location.

This article focusses on the second option.

Steps to Dump Log Files to a Specific Location:

Rather than locating the GroupID log files in their respective folders, you can use the Logs Dump feature to collect and dump your required logs to a specific location.

  1. Right-click GroupID [connected domain name] in the left pane and select Diagnostics > Logs Dump on the shortcut menu.
The Logs Dump dialog box is displayed.

  2. From the GroupID Version drop-down list, select the GroupID version you want to dump the logs for.
If you select a version that has been uninstalled, an error is displayed.

  3. In the Dump logs of area, select the check boxes for the GroupID modules or events for which you want to dump the log files.

    • On selecting the Event Viewer check box, the Event Logs list is enabled. Expand it and select the check boxes for the required logs.
The list displays all logs that are maintained by Windows Event Viewer.
    • On selecting the IIS check box, the Websites list is enabled. Expand it and select the check boxes for the websites you want to dump the logs for.
  4. Click Dump.

  5. On the Choose dump file name dialog box, specify a name for the zipped dump file and browse to the location where you want to save it. Then click Save.
GroupID saves the zipped file containing logs for the selected modules/events at the specified location.
