Applies To:
GroupID 8, 9 and 10 - Self-Service & Automate
Summary:
While creating a group using GroupID Self-Service or Automate, we can select Private, Semi-Private, or Public as its security type. A group's security type is a GroupID pseudo attribute that indicates the privilege to join a group.
- Private – A closed group where the group owner solely determines group membership.
- Semi-Private – The group owner approves users' requests to join or leave the group.
- Public – An open group that anyone can join or leave.
Note: | In this article, the term ‘owner’ denotes both primary and additional owners. |
More Information:
Membership of a private group is determined by the group owner. Users cannot join or leave a private group, nor can they send join or leave requests. Membership of a private group is managed on the Members tab in group properties.
Semi-private groups, like private groups, have an owner who determines membership, except that users can request to join or leave the group. Owners can also manage membership on the Members tab in group properties. Users can request to join/leave a semi-private group perpetually or temporarily.
Requests must be approved by the group owner, who can find pending requests in the Request Inbox in GroupID Management Console and in the Self-Service portal.
Note: | Using GroupID 8.1 or above, join/leave requests can also be approved/denied from the GroupID mobile app. |
A public group is open to all users. Users can join or leave a public group without requiring any approval. The administrator can optionally configure email notifications to be sent to the group owner when a user joins or leaves a public group. An example of a public group may be a reader club or a football club fan group.
